They're blaming it on a luck of specialist input at nursery, I believe.

Spookily, I managed to hold a pencil when I started school in spite of the fact that I was from a supposedly deprived background and attended not one single day of nursery.

Some years ago, I was involved in primary/secondary transition. I recall my primary colleagues bemoaning the fact that the nursery class was getting children who were not toilet trained, had no idea of how to behave around other people and, in one horrendous case, didn't even know their own names. (Twins. Answered to either 'The Twins' or 'Hey, you!') That's down to non-existent parenting, surely.

When I was in sixth yr (in the late '70s), I volunteered to work in a local nursery. In order to gain admission, parents had to be able to state that their child was at least 3 yrs old and had been toilet trained. I'm at a loss as to why many modern parents seem to be unable or unwilling to cope with the basics with their children.

Well, what do you expect? The parents were so busy just leaving them on ipads that they never managed to take them to the park, or to toilet train them either. I'm not joking-friends who work in Reception tell me it's very common. We were holding pencils much younger-but they didn't tell people not to give toddlers ordinary thin pencils for mark-making back then!

It was found to be discriminatory to insist children couldn't attend nursery if they weren't toilet trained

Had I been a nursery teacher I would have refused to wipe any wean's bottom. I mean, come on, get real!
