PTA events

Discussion in 'Governors' started by kanddd, Oct 22, 2011.

  1. I am a Governor with responsibilities for Health and Safety and therefore have to check that risk assessments are in place. Where a PTA event is being held in the school, which will involve our children, but out of school hours, who is responsible for writing up the risk assessment? Is it the person in charge of risk assessments, or the PTA who is holding the event?

IMO, the person who is actually running an event/activity/trip should always be writing up the risk assessment, since it is their responsibility (not the H&S postholder) to ensure that the event runs safely.
The person with responsibility for risk assessments should be there to provide guidance, read the RA and offer further input where something has been missed, and ultimately approve / disapprove the RA which has been submitted. It may be fair to assume that the PTA may need help if they have not produced these before.
If someone unrelated to the event is writing the risk assessment, surely that defeats the whole purpose of the organiser assessing risks and putting in place control measures. If this is done 'remotely' by another member of staff, it is less likely to be followed.
