Proof - if needed - that supply teachers are bottom of the food chain

    You may have become aware of Brampton Manor Academy - the school in Newham where 41 Sixth Formers have received Oxbridge offers. This is great news and I know from my own time teaching in Newham that schools there are challenging. So - all kudos to the head and his 'No Excuses' approach. However, a feature about the school in today's Telegraph brought me up short with this sentence:
    'He (the head) does not employ a single supply teacher, instead deliberately overstaffing the school in a "number of curriculum areas, to make sure that our students are constantly being taught by high-quality graduates." So, there you have it, and there was me thinking I was a 'high-quality' graduate....

    It is a bit tactless I would agree. He could have just said intead that he overstaffs so he can ensure he has enough subject specialists .

    They also select students from miles out of catchment, so it's not really a college that takes on all those students who have to do post 16 courses. Fair play to the kids from underprivileged backgrounds who broke through the glass ceiling but yah boo to the school for dropping all the others of low and moderate level.

    I agree that we're bottom of the food chain but I also don't follow the assumption in the article.

    If they are over-staffed in several subject areas then a lot of teachers will have free time when they are available to cover. If they cover the majority then they'll be stressed and these 'high-quality graduates' will likely be out of their subject area, so no real gain. If there is little cover then perhaps they'll have the time to do quality planning and marking but little cover means no need for supply teachers anyway.

    Perhaps the Head is just like one of these successful sports' team managers who takes all the credit for his wonderful tactics but it's just the luck of not having a load of injuries that did it.

    Maybe it's skewed by the Telegraph spin which suggests that supply teachers are not 'high-quality' graduates?

    I went to do one of them teach a lesson to see if we will have you for long term supply stuff. Was given the remit for the lesson "anything from aqa gcse forces and motion topic"
    So, planned that in the day or two available ... Received Mon eve, worked mon tue elsewhere.
    Turned up at 9.15 for told 9.30,"lesson start at 10.
    Was taken up to staff room to meet head of science, who said hello to me," we will go up about five to" and then she turned. And continued her conversation with her colleague about her honey moon and wedding, no offer of a drink, or anything. Sat, just wait ting.
    On the way to the classroom she begins to ask me questions, the answers to which she would have seen on mmy cv. Clearly hadn't read it.
    So I teach the lesson while herself, a dh and an ass head wander in and out for the half hour. Complete it and then get walked out to reception by the ass head, told that they will contact agency.
    That was Wednesday. A yay or nay is fine. Some schools just want a vacancy. This one had some very rude staff.
    The arrogance of some schools towards "the supply". As if we don't make professional judgements of them while they sit the
    It all smug that "they do a better job, can teach and control the kids" unlike the supply. There's a belief among these arrogant incompetent and rude members of staff, lazy too that we do supply because wea are not good enough to do the permanent stuff. That we are inferior. So don't you dare turn up in some places obviously a more capable and worthy teacher than they that created the mess that requires your services.
    Imagine that tho? Hello I'm the Head of scien, e, nice to see you, just sit down there and twiddle your thumbs for half hour before I take a look at you properly with my very important colleagues. Jokes. I turned down work, a potential other long termer if I'd committed fully to the first week. Jokers.
    Yup, the supply teacher. The great invisible quantity that can never be held to account yet is always accountable

    Had it looking around prospective schools for one of my own kids (at a point of school transition - not just jumping schools for the fun of it). Prospective parents' meeting and I'm mentally playing buzzword bingo and trying to read between the SMT-twaddle-speak and the Head goes into a spiel about how "we never use supply teachers because we don't find the children cope with the lack of consistency and it distresses them" (more "they'll eat them alive" from some of the work I've done in our area at KS2!) and then later I was chatting to the Head, and our current school's Head was in the background in earshot and the "Oh you're obviously involved in education - what do you do" conversation came up. My reply of "I'm a supply teacher" and the Head's squirming with embarrassment trying to backpedal, coupled with our current Head trying not to kill herself laughing in the background was hilarious.

    Oh yeah, I was on the emails in the last long term place. Couple of examples of whole school emails sent, that demonstrate the position of the supply teacher.

    "some one come up to this room, there's supply in there and they're running up and down disturbing my lesson"

    "graffiti keeps appearing behind the radiators in this classroom. Please check if you teach in there. Supply aren't helping"

    Same place had a number of students with "no cover lesson" passes.
    Invisible. Still reeling a little over the rudenesz of the head of science I met last week. Treated me like I wasn't there for the whole time I wS there as good as. Shocking.

    To carry on on the theme of 'tactless': the children I was supervising today were told by the on call guy that 'Miss is STILL a teacher'. I am sure he meant well but maybe of a generation that does not know how to measure the impact of his words. And yes, I am being ageist!

    Don't forget "highly qualified graduates" means someone who hasn't had teacher training yet...

    You should have said "I'm a teacher" and insert subject if you wish.

    That is what I used to do.
