Possible loophole

    Just thought I would share a thought. Limits on supply rule whilst you still need to complete induction, you could always just call yourself a cover supervisor. And I am being serious here, you could just call yourself a cover supervisor and not be hindered by the ruling. The ruling specifically aimed at those who are called supply teachers, but the education act of 2002/03 specifically states that even those undertaking a cover supervisor role can carry out specified work.

    So if you find yourself in a jam with the 4 term limit rule or 5 year in Wales, just call yourself a cover supervisor. I don't think it would work if you go through an LA supply pool, but certainly, many supply agencies are doing this as are self employed teachers.

    Take a gander at the CS forum, plenty there doing CS jobs despite having QTS. The 4 term thing only applies if you are a supply teacher, nothing said about being a cover supervisor which is classed as a different role.

    Cover supervisors are not employed as qualified teachers-their contracts are different (not teachers) so you are correct in that this is outside of the statutory regulations for induction. However CS are not paid as teachers and there is likely to be local opposition in cases where CS's have been used to replace teaching staff. To do the specified work of a teacher you have to be employed as a teacher and only if you are unqualified are you employed as an instructor usually on a temporary basis until a qualified teacher is available.
    The self employment route needs to be carefully considered as there have been several recent employment cases which have proved that the self employment is not valid and only a way of avoiding charges national insurance etc. To be truly self employed you need to pay your own NI contributions and organise your own tax! Great fun!

    Before the post of Cover superviser existed, there were positions as unqualified teachers. I had used up my 4 term supply allowance in 2001 and couldn't find a final Induction post. I was offered 6 weeks of teaching MFL at a school but couldn't take it as I was not allowed to be employed as a qualified teacher on anything under a term's length and the Dept of Education warned me that I couldn't be employed as an unqualified teacher as I was qualified!
    I suggested that I could just omit my QTS from any application forms and they warned me of potential legal action for lying on an application form!
    The dilemma no longer exists as Cover Supervisers are not teachers, qualified or unqualified. You are as free to apply for and take CS work as you are to take TA work or shop work. You just can't be paid on the unqualified teacher pay scale when you are qualified.

    Firstly, the dangerous legislation which I think is about time supply teachers used to their advantage states that anybody actually can carry out specified work, believe it or not, it is there in the education act of 2002. As I said, it would be better than nothing. And some CSs are being paid more than you would get as a supply.

    Self employment, the cases I noted were mainly those who set themselves up and tried to pay themselves through dividends and avoiding paying what HMRC deems to be the correct tax. If you are self employed, log everything, and pay your own NC contributions which is so simple to set up, then things are fine.
