I have just been interrupted in the middle of an important task (shelling monkey nuts left over from Christmas) to answer the phone. When I picked it up, a recorded message from British Gas told me that they had tried to ring me, but when I answered the phone all of their representatives were busy and unable to speak to me. Why ring me then? Why ring me to tell me that they have no one free to ring me? I didn't ask them to ring. I was quite happy eating my way through a bowl of peanuts. I had to stop what I was doing to be told that the person who had phoned me was too busy to talk to me. And breathe . . .
