Poetry Layout

  1. Poetry is not all about writing freely. Poetry is about applying pattern to the physical medium - normally the sounds, though occasionally you also see sight rhymes.
    Free verse arguably has subtle, irregular patterns. Arguably it's just prose pretentiously and falsely offered as a poem. You can defend either position.

  4. Give them a structure they have to use. There are some good videos on iambic pentameter on youtube and I find kids get the idea of ten syllables even if they can't figure out the stressed/unstressed thing.
