Poems/Texts with figurative language! HELP!

Discussion in 'Primary' started by hayley1611, Jun 15, 2011.

  1. Hello,
I have got to teach a lesson on the use of figurative language in texts for a year 4 class soon, does anybody have any poems or texts they could suggest that would be useful?
    Thanks

    Do you have a theme?
What do you want the children to achieve from the lesson? To study poems or to write their own?

  4. Hi! Thanks your for your response!
I only have 20 minutes to teach a lesson based upon an objective taken from strand 7/8 (Understanding and interpreting texts, engaging and responding to texts) of the Literacy Framework. I decided that I want them to meet the objective "explain how writers use figurative and expressive language to create images and atmosphere"
Im totally stuck! Hope you can help! xx

Then you need to choose a poem that demonstrates metaphor, similes or personification quite clearly and ask the children to recognise where these techniques have been used. Encourage them to discuss why the poet might have chosen to use this device and the effect that it has on the reader. Does the writer's language choice create a picture in their minds? Does it help to create atmosphere? Perhaps you could find a couple of poems on the same theme and compare how the writers have used language.
The Children's Poetry Archive is a good place to look for poem - or The Poetry Archive - but this site does include poems for older pupils.

You might also look on BBC class clips as they have a really good selection of poems with key words which will help you to search for poems by terms such as metaphor or by theme.

Choose a poem that you like and feel you can analyse confidently.
