Please can anyone suggest a poem I could base a 4 week cross curricular topic around for Y6? Y2 are doing 'The Owl & the Pussycat' they can do: drawings of cats/dogs, make books about the animals, look at habitats, fod chains, work of RSPCA, design boats that sail best, taste quince & honey etc.
I desperately need a poem thats equivalent in natural links. Any advice greatly appreciated please.

Thank you for prompt help. We're only allowed to use one poem, so are advised to choose carefully so we can get lots of work from it! :)
I dismissd The Highwayman because I thought it's done in Year 5 sometimes and I struggled to think of natural links with science etc.
I'll certainly look into Bedd Gelert though!
Any more ideas greatly appreciated - other than Year 2, every other year group need help with their brainstorming!

I have used Bedd Gelert - but didn't have to get all subjects in - just concentrated on Literacy.
These are sites that I used:

Another poem I love is A Hurricane Hits England by Grace Nichols - I can see that you could bring in a lot of other work into this:
If you click on this link you can hear Grace Nichols talking about and performing the poem.

  5. The Lady of Shalott? Not many links to environment but lots of other fab work you could get out of it. Drama/art/Design tech/writing? My Year 6s loved it this year.
  6. What about "The Convergence Of The Twain" by Thomas Hardy? about the sinking of the Titanic? Quite a challenging poem but loads of potential for expanding the curriculum there. While I wouldn't really rate Hamilton Trust's planning on it, they did have an animation of the poem which my kids enjoyed - plus loads of history/science links. And you get to put Leo and Kate on the Smartboard at the end!
