Can I just plug a basic pickup into my netbook and play the instrument through the speaker? Can I record onto Audacity using this?
I know I'll have to use an adapter on the plug.
Sorry if it's a really obvious question, but I'm a bit reluctant to plug anything into a computer that might do it harm.

You won't harm your computer by plugging it in.The output from this device will be tiny amounts of millivolts. Whether or not it works as you hope will depend on whether your computer is capable of processing the signal.
Suck it and see what you get.

    Thank you.
Once the adaptor plug arrives, I'll give it a go.
