    We stream for phonics.

    Advantages: children taught at their own level; teachers find it easy to plan; less keen teachers cannot skip phonics on days they are busy.

    Disadvantages: reinforcing phonic work in reading and writing is impossible because you don't know what most of the class are working on.

    We are considering going back to class teaching because we are beginning to feel the disadvantage far outweighs the advantages.

    I agree with Minniemix on both points.
    We stream and the groups are split between teachers and TAs.
    In addition: advantages - children make fast progress because the teaching is pitched at exactly the right level. They benefit from smaller groups. You can see exactly how each child is doing.
    disadvantages - harder to track assessments. Some of the TAs have weaker subject knowledge and we have to keep switching the groups to make sure all have time taught by trained members of staff.

    I would never go back to whole class. The children have made much faster progress since we started streaming.

    Approx 20 mins, straight after morning play. They line up in phonics groups to speed things up.
