Phonics year 1

    Can I ask if anyone can point me to a website or perhaps can you let me know, which order you will go in for phonics this year?

    I know I'll be starting to review all the sounds from reception, but once I get to air and are, I'm a bit muddled.

    I also know that everyone uses different schemes, therefore different orders. But just wondered if there was a simpler or different way to how I'm doing it now.

    My school doesn't have a scheme which meant I was a bit like you. I however stumbled across PhonicsPlay - they have planning for each phase, interactive activities and other helpful resources. I assess in the first week - and make sure that the kids are where they were said to be and then start of with Phase 4 on the Phonics Play Scheme then just follow that throughout the year moving onto Phase 5 with children who need interventions being doing that with my TA.

    I have Read Write Inc. cards that I use alongside the PhonicsPlay scheme. I use these when introducing new sounds and alternatives. These cards have the graphemes on and pictures on with a sentence for each grapheme so for 'oo' they have 'poo at the zoo' for 'oo' it is 'look at a book' so they learn the new phoneme as per the PhonicsPlay scheme but they have a picture too and a sentence to help them 1) differentiate the alternatives and 2) recognise the sound in a word. I found they quite like having the picture, you can play a game where you try to trick them which mine really enjoy playing.

    I went through the suggestions and they've been great. Can I ask for your tips on this now?

    I have a good idea on where to start, what to revise from reception (thanks EBF phonics play), can I ask how you initially assess this?

    I've got a grid with boxes all along with each grapheme along the top.... Dont really know how to fill it out or how I should use it?

    And do you have a phonics book, I started one in January last year. What is recorded in it? Sometimes I put a photocopy of the whiteboard work, sometimes class work, not sure if that was alright?

    I would recommend letters and sounds supplemented with activities from phonics play.

    If you have access to T winkl they have assessment sheets for all the Phases. I personally would get each child to read as many as they can and tick them off. I would do this at the start of Autumn 1 and then at the end of each half term. I have a spreadsheet where I put in how many sounds they can read to track progress over the year, and to help with groupings.
    If a child only misses 1 or 2 sounds from a Phase then I let them try reading the sounds from the next Phase. If they can’t read 3 or more, then I stop there. This is what I’ve done for the last four years and it works for me.
    I also assess them on which sounds they can write, eg I will say ‘air as in chair’ and ‘igh’ as in ‘night’ and they have to write the graphemes. I do this on paper and keep it in an assessment folder.
    I don’t have Phonics books for the children, it’s done with whiteboards and pens. The work in their English books and their assessments will adequately reflect their progress, in my opinion.

    We are also Letters and Sounds with Phonics Play. Our books are ORT, mostly bought with match funding a few years ago, and some people are now saying that we can't have these as they can't match the children's abilities closely enough. We've been told to go to RWI, but we really don't want to. What reading books do other people use? Thanks
