Phonics phase 3...Year 1 (observation...help!!)

Discussion in 'Primary' started by orchid77, Jan 4, 2011.

  1. Hi everyone, I am soon to have an observation teaching a year 1 group of children phase 3 phonics. I have looked through the letters and sounds book but am a little uninspired. Has anyone got any tips/lesson ideas to make this a really good lesson??

    Thanks so much

How about if you were to first teach the whole class - have them sitting down while you introduce the phonemes; use "press-button flashcards" which they have to press the button for each part of the word as they read it, then drill them on spelling words on scrap paper or small whiteboards to hold up to show you. Then general practice of Phase 3 phonemes with a computer game. Then explain the activities to do next and split them into three ability groups, to rotate every five minutes. One group, with you, do drilling practice with the target phonemes; you can have them write words using the phonemes, while you make notes on their ability. The second group, with your TA (if you have one) to play a phonics game - a jigsaw, wordsearch, or flashcards game) and the third group to carry on playing on the computer game.
Some good computer games for phonics:

Finish by reviewing the phonics studied and learned with the class and giving them a homework sheet:

    Good luck!
