Phenol reaction problem

Discussion in 'Science' started by Hanjo, Jul 11, 2012.

  1. I always do reactions of phenol with my A'level Chemistry group to illustrate it's reactions. However, with bromine water they see the decolourisation and get the antiseptic smell but we can never get the white precipitate that we should do. Any ideas why??

  2. the issue may lie with your bromine water.
i always use bromine ampoules and get the white/yellowish ppt.

I haven't used phenol for that for years. Guidance from Nuffield / Salters has been to use safer alternatives for most practicals which I have done as phenol is pretty dodgy.
If you are not getting a ppt, perhaps you need more concentrated bromine solution. It goes off quite fast.
    Best wishes,
