PGCE Upper Primary University of Leicester 2012/13

Discussion in 'Trainee and student teachers' started by cyber_k_lily, Apr 21, 2012.

  1. I am embarking upon PGCE Upper Primary at the University of Leicester in
September and would appreciate any information regarding placements from
    either prospective or current students.

I have not received any correspondence outlining the course - does
anybody have any details concerning our observation week as to whether
we or tutors secure a placement?

    Many thanks.

    Hi,

I'm currently doing my upper PGCE at Leicester, and your preliminary week is something you will need to organise yourself. I wouldn't leave it until the last minute though to organise one as quite a few people struggled to find somewhere suitable.

Any other questions feel free to ask!

  4. I am also hoping to join the course in September (grades permitting!) and my understanding was that we are to sort the placements out ourselves. Hopefully it will be in the welcome pack when they send them out, though I'm not sure when that will be. Hopefully this is some help!

  5. Hello Leanne189,
Thank you for your message. When I rang the PGCE office, they confirmed that we must secure a preliminary placement. I have arranged one at a local school, but I would advise you to approach schools now rather than awaiting details in that elusive Welcome Pack! It is for the week commencing 10th September.
Best of luck with the grades.

Hi all - not sure if it's the same, but I've been accepted onto a secondary PGCE for English - and was told that the Welcome Pack's would get sent out 'in May'. No exact dates, but that's this month already!

  7. Hey, I had a late interview last week and found out today that..... I'm on! Would be great to be in contact with as many people as possible before we start especially as I've found out so late. I've started a Facebook page for PGCE primary Leicester 2012 on Facebook. I would email the link but my computer is so slow its making it difficult for me to upload. You should find it easily enough if you type into the search bar, the picture at the moment is me in a 'Superwoman' costume (only picture I could access quickly!) Hope to see you on there x

Hi, I did the course a few years ago and qualified in 2010..

Its quite squidged in but the outline of the course was:

A 3 week placement in the autumn term (This was KS1 for all of us and we built up teaching little bits to whole lessons)
In the autumn term we also had an essay that didnt count towards our course on AFL

A 6 week placement in the spring term (EYFS OR KS2 depending on Upper/lower where you built up to teaching 80% of the timetable in the last week)
In the spring term you also do a master credited essay (not as scary as it sounds)

A 7 week placement in the summer term (Building up to a full timetable 80% quite rapidly)
In the summer term you have to do an essay on your chosen specialism.

The seminars are on everything but every week you will have seminars on Maths,Literacy, Proffesional strand and topic/connecting the curriculum.

The lecturers are all generally lovely, if you do have problems make sure you stand up for yourself and request help.

Good luck! Any questions feel free to ask!

  9. Just done the Leicester PGCE. We did a 4 week, 6 week and 6 week placement, but from speaking to a lecturer earlier in the year think the TDA might be changing how many days student teachers are expected to spend in school.

Dont worry about placements now. They sort them out really well. You only need to make sure you have your weeks preliminary placement sorted out yourself.
