PGCE Interview with Institute of Education. Anyone know about their process of interview and what it involves

Discussion in 'Science' started by MFARAH, Mar 13, 2009.

  1. Hello guys, i am new to this and was wondering if any of you have any tips or advice about this particular institution (Institute of Education) or other universities in general about how they conduct their PGCE interviews specially for secondary science.
My interview is on the 17th April so i have about a month to get ready.
Any help will be much appreciated.

    Thanks

  3. Hi,
I had my Interview at the Institute last month for secondary Social Sciences. there was a group task, a written task, and a brief interview. I think the format may depend on the faculty that is Interviewing you though...

  4. Hi,

I'm currently at MMU IoE doing a PGCE in Science at the moment and had my interview last year. I wouldn't worry about it - it was just a one to one interview where they ask you the normal questions (why do you want to be a teacher? why do you think you would be good? etc.) and they ask you thre subject knowledge questions (one biology, one chemistry, one physics), which I think is the toughest part. Just make sure you've looked over the topics for KS3 for the subjects which aren't your specialism to refresh your memory and you'll be fine!

    Good luck!

  5. I had an interview at IOE for science a few months ago. They were very welcoming and started with an intro to the course, the Institute etc. We were also told that it was not competitive which was reassuring! We then had an individual interview (about 20 mins), a presentation to one of the tutors (5 mins plus 5 mins chat after), a written task and a group discussion.

As suggested, brush up on subject knowledge (especially your non-specialist subjects) and I would check out the recent report on the 'crisis' in Science GCSE standards. Try to bring in some educational issues in your interview as I felt there was little other opportunity to do so.

You will be sent a lot of info though regarding the details of these tasks so don't worry. They seemed more interested in personal attributes and enthusiasm than anything else. I was given a few 'what would you do if a child asked you why...' questions in my individual interview which I think were the only things you could not prepare for but probably gave the best indication of how well you can translate your subject knowledge to the classroom. I also felt it was important to have your own questions about the course to ask them (try not to go for obvious ones as they will answer them in the intro).

  6. Thanks guys. Much appreciated for the info. They did send me and email telling me what will happen during the day, such as group discussion, individual interview, and a 5 min presentation on a topic of my choice.
Still got around 10 days to get it ready, hopefully I will be fully prepared whatever they throw at me.
If there is any1 else taking their interview on the same day, please get in touch.
    Thanks

  7. Hope your interview went well, they’ve probably even responded by now. I was considering putting IOE as my first choice. Could you please let me know what science based questions they asked? Just wondering how specific they were, It’s been so many years since I left education. What was the interview generally like, what kind of questions did they ask?
    Thanx.

  8. Hi well-done in obtaining a place. Just wanted to know how long did IOE take before you received a reply. Its been almost 2 weeks and l still have not heard from them concerning the Sec. PGCE ICT. The interview i feel went really well...i even pointed out how much i enjoyed the whole process.

    Anyways good luck......

ps maybe i should call them??

  9. Congratulations!
My feelings exactly - in addition to being increasingly anxious and nervous!
I will see you in September then! What is your specialism? Mine is physics :)
Enjoy the calm before the storm x
