Period pain - getting worse because getting older?

I used to get a few twinges in first day or two of period, but recently have been getting aches well beforehand - for a week or so.
Could it be due to my middle-agedness? No signs of menopause, apart from slightly delayed periods (have had a couple of times when I've been on the verge of getting pregnancy test, but then normality has resumed).
    Any ideas?
