Performance Poetry Year 7

Discussion in 'English' started by sjones86, Feb 24, 2011.

  1. I'm about to start a three/four week unit on Performance Poetry with my year 7 mixed ability class. The unit starts with examining poems and leads up to students creating their own and performing them for the class.
I would be grateful for any suggestions of activities to do with the group or any skills in particular to focus on as I haven't taught the unit before and am struggling a little for ideas.

    Thankyou

Do you know the Poetry Archive site? It has many recordings of poems that you can use with your class. If you investigate the site you'll find resources and lesson plans too:
    http://www.poetryarchive.org/poetryarchive/home.do
This resource for instance is related to performance and pupils writing their own poems:
    http://www.poetryarchive.org/poetryarchive/resourceBankHome.do
It is also worth looking at BBC Class Clips:
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningzone/clips/
Type performance poems into the search box and you'll find lots of examples.

There are a lot of great resources on the Hertfordshire Grid for learning, but you'd need to shift through for performance:
    http://www.thegrid.org.uk/learning/english/ks3-4-5/ks3/drama-poetry-prose/poetry/index.shtml

There was a thread discussing performance poetry on this site that has a few suggestions too:
    https://community.tes.co.uk/forums/p/355385/5030946.aspx

I hope this is enough to get some ideas going for you!

The poetry station is a brilliant site - lots of contemporary poets talking about and reading/performing their poems as well as readings of older poetry.
    www.poetrystation.org.uk
If you've any money to spend, I'd also recommend The English and Media Centre KS3 poetry book and DVD. Not cheap though! I think the poetry station site might be linked to the EMC.

  6. Thankyou both for your suggstions. I'll check out the pages and hopefully be inspired [IMG]

Oh, it is too late for you now, but I've written almost 900 new poems, and many have been published and many are on my website for you to freely use. I've written for all age groups, but look at my narrative poems. I've sent you a message.

  9. Benjamin Zepaniah is great for this type of thing. I always like to play his youtube clip of him performing 'Talking Turkeys'. The kids love it and it's very good. Might be nice as an introduction activity or a way of showing them how to perform a poem if they are going to perform their own as an activity later in the scheme.
