PE warm ups - do they have to be related to the main activity?

    I'm a student teacher planning a dance lesson for this week and I'm trying to come up with a decent warm up activity. I have a few ideas but none are really related to the main activity (dance/mirroring) but does that matter? I got the impression that the warm up is meant to warm them up rather than really be a introduction into the main point of the lesson, if that makes sense, but wanted to check what you guys think?

    completely agree with you. the warm up is simply that, just warming up. I have a fun dance that we do at the start of most lessons. We're also having a whole school drive on skipping this term, so most warm ups at the moment consist of improving skipping skills.

    Not a PE specialist but for me the 'warm up' is to warm the muscles up to prevent injury in the main session. So if they're going to be using particular muscle groups which are not normally used you give them some practice using those particular muscles 'warming them up'. Especially important in a dance session.

    When I trained (admittedly several years ago) we were told that children did not need to warm up for the sake of their muscles as they do not store lactic acid in them the same way as adults. Therefore they do not need a warm up before PE. How many children do you get coming in off the playground with pulled muscles from running around for 15 minutes? I never warm up, and although I do a starter type activity to settle them down this could be more vigourous than the main part of the lesson. I've never had an injury due to muscle strain.

    See your point bonniconni, but my post did refer specifically to the use of muscles <u>not </u>normally used, so not those they'd use running around at playtime etc.
     
  6. I always play a game called Beans :) I call out a bean, they do the action. There's running bean (run on the spot), jumping bean (jump on the spot), broad bean (make a wide shape), string bean (make a tall thin shape), baked bean (crouch into a small shape) and my personal favourite: the french bean (they have to wiggle their hips and say Ooh La La!) hehe, they love it and it gets them active before we start the lesson. I use it more to wake them up and loosen them up rather than anything else.
     
  7. I love this game! I use this too :) Lots of jumping around activities followed by a little bit of balancing and stretching as well before dance! :)
     
  8. My warm-up and cool-down are so rarely anything to do with the lesson.
    A good trick if you're ever stuck is to tell them you want a quick routine containing, e.g., one activity to raise your heartrate and one to stretch a group of muscles; then give them 5 mins to come up with something in small groups and then let a couple of groups be 'teachers' and lead everybody else. I absolutely love it haha [​IMG] xx

    You can combine these 2 by asking them to 'freeze-frame' (like statues), everytime you clap / beat a tambourine etc.

    This is true but one of the purposes of the warm-up and cool down is to build good habits for later life. Learning to look after one's body is really imporrtant no matter how old you are.

    Dont forget Jellybean and Old bean (bent over with walking stick)!

    a warm-up is not just to physically prepare the body for the intended activity but also to mentally prepare - so it needs to be linked in some way. a dance warm-up keeping a beat would link as it would stimulate timing needed for main activity even if not mirroring, as dance should be choroegraphed in motifs.
    i have a little pet hate when people say a warm-up is so you prevent injury! this you can't guarentee only minimise the risk. this would be the answer i would expect at secondary but never get any child starting y7 being able to tell me this.

    Well that's my view as well. I do always look at my activity and make sure that the warm up that I'm doing will warm up the muscles that they'll be using, especially if, like you said, they don't often use them.




    I do this too and they love it! I forgot about french bean though :( I do broad bean too (stretch out wide) and like someone else said, jelly bean. I find it's quite good for then linking into the main section as I do sitting bean, looking bean, listening bean and because somehow it's now a game and fun, they do it really well! And I can refer to it during the lesson if I need to. I was going to do a warm up to music, when it's at normal level, they move around the room at a normal pace doing an action they want (walk, skip, dance, hop, jump), when it's loud they go fast, when it's quiet they tip toe and when it stops they sit down as fast as they can. So music bumps with a twist I guess. Now I want to do the bean game though because I forgot all about the french bean and I know my class would love it... hmm what to do!
