Parental leave - formal unpaid leave

Discussion in 'Parenting' started by weejocklassie, Mar 13, 2012.

  1. Hi,
I teach in an upper school, andi have a son who is due to start primary school in September.
I want to take a weeks parental leave for the first week of term in September to get my son settled into school.

Unfortunately, our school has a three period day, and finishes at 3.40; the primary school finishes at 3 and is 25 mins from the school I teach in, so there is no way of just "nipping" to get him/ drop him off.

Now, I have looked on the NUT website, and it seems to say that I can take leave in blocks of a week or more, up to his 5th birthday, and that they can only postpone it for up to six months if there is a business case against it.

Also, on the ATL website, I came across this document which talks about the reasons for postponing it, basically, it should only be postponed if there is a pressing and exceptional business need to do so.

Does anyone have any experience of taking parental leave, either as a parent, or as a manager who has granted it, or even if a colleague has taken it?

Any comments appreciated, trying to get an idea together before I go to speak to the boss!
