Outstanding PMLD tips & practices

    I'm after some PMLD advice. Highly organised and personalised learning is clearly key. What are your best bits? What strategies have practicing PMLD staff used to push their teaching and learning up into the outstanding arena? Is there one particular aspect of your teaching that you've focused on that has made significant impact on your learners progress?
    I'd be really grateful if you would share any thoughts or ideas, even just little snippets or moments that have brought positive learning experiences or any links. Many thanks.

    I have only taught 1 PMLD learner (they were in my SLD class for a year but now back in a PMLD class).
    I read a lot of Penny Lacy, Helen Bradley and Peter Imray articles.
    I also started using Routes for Learning for them as assessment, not the P levels. I found that RfL gave good suggestions for activities.
    Getting them ready for learning was the biggest challenge, they would just not engage in anything.
    Frequent intensive interaction sessions helped here, they even looked up and made eye contact with me during the sessions several times and did the same thing during a lesson observation which was received well.
    Sorry I can't help you more, this is the only experience I have.

    Yes, the names to look for are Pete Imray, Les Staves, Flo Longhorne, Keith Park, Melanie Nind and Dave Hewit (Intensive Interaction) and the late, amazing Penny Lacey. In terms of ICT I'd also add Ian Bean, Pete Wells and Carol Allen. I'm sure I've missed someone important but that's a start.

    As has been said the Welsh "Routes for learning" is brilliant for assessment and "next steps" as is Quest for Learning (the Irish equivalent)
    I'd also recommend using Penny Lacey's SCRUFFY targets rather than SMART ones to support progress. They are far more appropriate for students at the early P levels.
