Opting out of LEA provided broadband

Discussion in 'Primary' started by eatmygoal, Mar 23, 2011.

  1. Hi there,

Just wondered if anyone has opted out of their LEA internet provision and gone private instead?

We are currently tied into an arrangement with our LEA that I consider to be ridiculously expensive and horribly slow - I know that people living the same street as the school get faster speeds with their home broadband than we get for the whole school! It is struggling at the moment and will very soon be 'not fit for purpose'.

I know there are lots of issue re: reliability, safety/privacy, filtering etc. However surely there must be private firms offering tailor made packages for schools? If not then I'm sorely tempted to set one up as the price we are currently being charged is simply not competitive.

For a bit of context we are a two class entry primary school in a market town.

Any and all experiences, good and bad, gratefully received.

  3. We ahve our LA broadband and can get 10 megs download speed and we are out in the sticks.
I only know of 1 company (I am sure there are several) who specialise in providing schools IT solutions and internet connectivity, they are called Leverstock Ass. They are based in Hemel Hempstead, I think, but operate countrywide.
  4. Thanks Tom.

We get 2MB from our LEA and pay through the nose for it too! Will take a look at Leverstock.
