ocr national unit 21 - which graphics package should I buy?

Discussion in 'Computing and ICT' started by jillyjsm, Feb 18, 2010.

  1. As a non specialist ICT teacher I have been asked to research a graphics package so that I can deliver Unit 21 of the OCR Nationals as from September. I just wondered which to order, any ideas?

we use fireworks successfully for 21
  3. Serif suite does the job for this unit very nicely at a decent price.
  4. So many choices in the market!
An obvious power tool for editing pictures and images - go with Adobe Photoshop. Its an industry standard and well worth investing in if you have the money.
Also, Fireworks, a good easy to learn general purpose graphics app.
Serif PhotoPlus is a cheap Photoshop clone and well worth looking at.
Finally, don't forget the free/open source graphics applications (a key benefit being that the kids can download and use at home what you are teaching at school). There are many, but only three are worth seriously considering:
    GIMP, Paint.NET
and also INKSCAPE (if you are going to be doing illustrations, i.e. vector work)

Nothing to add, other than to ask what you already have?

  6. Hope you will be able teach Unit 21! The silence on renewal is now a bit concerning unless you register everyone by August.
  7. Serif Suite - good value package PLUS they have a very useful tutorial for Unit 21 that saves you reinventing wheels. We use their "Smoothies" scenario to teach the skills, that can be used "as is", or modified. But students then have to use another scenario for their coursework assessment.
  8. Thanks very much for all your advice, as we only have use of Paint and Corel Draw and very little money to purchase, the School has gone for Serif Suite, we have now registered all our pupils, and have started working on the first sections. It took quite a while to secure funding, hence the delay in replying to all your posts. Thanks again for helping me out.
  9. Serif suite is a good package - and as has already been said check out the teaching materials written by Serif which accompany Unit 21 (and others)
