OCR GCSE new spec A. Can anyone help?

Discussion in 'Geography' started by KNaylor, May 19, 2011.

  1. I am a LA home tutor (not a geography specialist!) working with an excluded student and I need to prepare him (in a very short amount of time) for the GCSE exams in June. The school aren't prepared to help me with resources except the pre-release document. I don't know a great deal about the new OCR Geography A spec but think that for the 'Similarities and Differences' exam that he needs to study his own region and another non-UK region. I'll be fine getting resources for his local area but I am struggling with the non-UK region.
Can anyone send me some resources or point me in the right direction? He is taking the foundation paper if that makes any difference.
  2. We use Mumbai as a contrasting location for similarities and differences - I think it has been a popular choice for a few schools as it features in the OCR endorsed textbook.
  3. Thanks for that information. Unfortunately I don't have access to that text book so am on my own. As I spent two years in Zanzibar I thought that might be my best bet as at least I have an understanding of the area. Do you think there would be a problem with that?
  4. No, you can do any non-uk place it doesn't matter.

The exam has a significant unseen location section... they will need to be able to interpret photos etc. Last year was rural scotland and aviemore. It threw my kids as it is so different from inner london so be warned!
