Today's results show that entries for GCSE Music are down to 38,511, consistently declining from a peak of 61,997 in 2007. Edexcel continues to attract the largest number of entries (14403 this year).

Last week's A-level music results showed a similar pattern: 4584 entries this year, down from a peak of 7611 in 2006, and with Edexcel again attracting the largest number of entries.

There were 1271 entries for A-level Music Technology this year, down from a peak of 3381 in 2008.

Unsurprisingly, entries for AS Music have dwindled to 1192 (the majority coming from Northern Ireland), down from a peak of 5557 in 2011.

That’s very sad news @florian gassmann. I hate to think where this is leading!
