NQT needing behaviour management ideas for a challenging year 3 class...

  1. Hello,
    I am starting my NQT year in September. I am so excited, however I did have the chance to teach my new class yesterday for the day, and from this I know that their behaviour will be challenging.
    I have tried various strategies before... positive praise/stickers/stars/certificates etc, which have all been effective but now I need a clear, concise range of strategies to use where positive behaviour is rewarded and bad behaviour is obsviously not acceptable.
    Has anyone got any good things that they have used in their classroom for children with challenging behaviour? Something structured and clear, as at the moment I have so many things in my head that I think I can do, I can't possibly do all of them at once!

    Your positivity sounds infectious; make sure you balance it with good common-sense boundaries, and make sure the kids know that while you may care about them (and I hope you do), you will insist that they follow your rules in order to create a safe and calm learning environment. If they see you as being soft/ fun/ nice at the start, then they will- and I stress this, they WILL- see you as a pushover, and they will behave more badly than you might otherwise have expected. So start off tough, even if it feels odd- not because you're a hard-ass, but because they NEED you to be tough. It's the best way to get them on board YOUR bus. After that, you can take them anywhere.
    So: set our your class rules
    Have a seating plan
    And try not to do this
    Be stern at first, and eventually you won't have to- and they will learn far more. And they'll enjoy it!
