NQT first job in private sector

Discussion in 'New teachers' started by AthenaDouglas, Feb 15, 2011.

  1. Hi,
I have an interview coming up in an independent primary school and was wondering whether as an NQT going straight into a independent school would make it difficult in the future to get a job in a mainstream school due to lack of certain experiences? I.e. smaller class sizes so less classroom management, not teaching music, pe, french etc. as specialist teachers take those classes.
The school does provide NQT induction so I do not need to be concerned about that.
I would be grateful for any advice about whether if I am offered the job I should take it or not?
    Thanks

I'm no expert but seeing the current shortage of jobs, I'd day take the job if you are offered one!!
Your main priority is getting induction done, if the school can provide this for you and you feel the school is right for you, I would definitely go for it!

  3. wow, sounds like a great[IMG] opportunity! Fingers crossed, hope you get it. :D

Wow - what a fantastic opportunity! Smaller classes, no PE and music to teach....I'd love it!

Have a look on the independent forum as well - lots of people ask this question! I did my NQT in an independent (secondary) school and am now in my 3rd year and really enjoying it.
Bear in mind that you might never want to go back into state education if you enjoy teaching in the independent sector. If you do want to go back, experience is still experience and a good headteacher will hire you if you are the best teacher they see for the vacancy. The only thing I worry about is losing touch with NC inititiatives (things like APP) so keep a close eye on the TES forums and keep in touch with state sector colleagues so you are aware of the jargon!
Best of luck with your interview.
