Not doing the job i applied for!! and now I'm not good enough!

    June 2018 I applied for a teaching that was my subject specialism. In the interview I asked specifically what it was they wanted me to do.. They were reintroducing the subject on the timetable and needed someone to help create schemes to start teaching and bring back GCSE. I got the job!
    Over the summer a new academy, a new head teacher came in. My timetable, very heavy with 2 subjects I am not qualified to teach or have any experience of teaching. Only KS3 for my subject specialism, then half way through the year my timetable changed and I had none of my specialist subject...
    Now i'm being told I'm not meeting the teacher standards as marking is not up to standard.
    Finding it difficult to learn, plan and mark three subjects I don't teach and now feel like i'm being punished. I brought up my concerns in January and had no response and no support....

    Can I really be that accountable?

    Advice please!

    Err.. yes, unfortunately.

    The interpretation of "Teacher's Standards" is down to SLT and it is very hard for someone in the cross-hairs to slide out of shot, especially as the standards do not specify subjects as such.
    Armed with the brilliance that comes from hindsight and being on the internet, this was probably the time to start looking elsewhere.
    Sorry this is far too harsh on you, you are in a trap not of your making and I would strongly suggest that you look elsewhere asap. Unless there are any members of SLT who will look favourably on you, you are clearly surplus to requirements and the tactic of threatening to go is probably not worth trying.

    I was in a similar position in my current school two years ago: the teaching approach and marking schemes changed, no advice or training was given and within three months the head approached me and told me a member of SLT had said I wasn't fit for the role. This was despite the member of SLT working in a different Key Stage and not having any experience of what I was doing (old or new way)! "Incompetency" was the word used I believe. When I looked into the new scheme and how it was being delivered, I actually found out that I was in the right with how I'd been approaching things, although I had been making a few mistakes. I found myself working 70+ hours to 'prove' I was getting it right, and in the end started looking for new jobs. I had 2 interviews and I think the reason I was leaving came across in one. In the meantime, others realised what was going on at school and I told the Head if it wasn't sorted - and if I didn't get any support - I'd raise it with my union. When I also mentioned that the issue had been going on since Christmas (it was then about now, May time) and that I'd raised concerns before about lack of support, their tack soon changed. We also ended up with a lot more support and training. What I'm saying is that if you have raised this issue before, and school seem to be trying to 'manage you out' of the role that you're now in, you need to seek Union advice and stand your ground. Schools, in my experience, are very keen to avoid the hassle of unions. I'm not a vociferous union member by any means (especially as never having supported a strike, which has also never gone down well with certain members of staff), but they are there to help and support you especially as it seems your school haven't been. I would also look to leave, but for the right reasons so that you can indeed pursue your specialism and interests in a school that will foster your Practice in the right way. Good luck!
