Is there any publications that you would recommend for articles that can be read independently by KS2 children? News articles, current affairs, news, science, etc.

Reasons our school renews its First News subscription each year:
    • Our KS2 and older KS1 really like reading First News.
    • Child-friendly news not all doom and gloom.
    • Does not contain articles or adverts unsuitable for children.
    • Weekly paper copies delivered to the school.
    • The crosswords and puzzles are popular.
    • Lots of short articles on a wide range of topics so goes down well with children who don't have the reading stamina to cope with long books.
    • Handy for children who have finished other tasks to pick up a copy and read an article for a few minutes.
    • Due to COVID19, they now send the newspaper by email too.
    • Also emails various weekly differentiated activities based on that week's paper.
    • Has produced useful resources for teaching structure and language features of a newspaper report, e.g.

First News is great - we have two copies a week, for Y5 and 6. I also find Newsround very useful and try to find time (only 5 minutes) to watch it every day with Y6, usually just before or just after break. It often sparks off very interesting discussions.
