New volunteers for the Tes Community

    Hello everyone,

    I wanted to let you know that a group of volunteer forum guides and community helpers will be available on the forums for a trial period from today.

    These members (along with a considerable amount of other forum regulars) already offer support to members, particularly new ones, to help the forums run more smoothly and help the Community to grow.

    However, the aim of this trial is to make helpful members in the Community more visible to new and regular posters with the use of a banner on their avatar and a note in their signature stating that they have one or both of the following roles on the forums:

    Forum guide

    They will:
    • Welcome and help newbies find their way around by signposting relevant forums and threads.
    • Respond to new users.

    • Flag up a thread that needs to be moved to a more relevant forum (optional).
    • Report technical issues and signpost members to the relevant threads to report their technical problems.
    Community helper

    They will:
    • Welcome and help newbies find their way around by signposting relevant forums and threads.
    • Respond to new users.
    • Offer advice and identify other members who can help answer users’ queries if they can’t.

    The volunteers will cover the following forums:

    Career clinic
    Heads of department
    New teachers
    Pay & conditions
    Private tutors
    Scotland - education news
    Supply teaching
    Teaching overseas
    Tes Authors’ Group
    Trainee and student teachers
    Welcome lounge
    Workplace dilemmas

    Following a lot of strong feedback from the Community, the roles are flexible so the forum members will only be available when they have the time. They do not have the ability to lock, move or remove threads.

    Please note the following:

    • Volunteer forum guides and community helpers are not moderators. They do not deal with reported posts, contentious content – which is part of the Moderation Team’s remit.
    • Community helpers and forum guides are regular members of the Community who wish to be recognised by new and established members for consistently offering advice and support, tips on navigating the forums; signposting; being friendly and welcoming and do not mind being identified as helpful people in the forums.
    • A ‘Community helper’ banner or a ‘forum guide’ banner will be visible on their avatar alongside a message in their signature.
    • Forum guides are not techies, however if they have some technical knowledge that may help a member then they can respond to users’ posts.
