Any definitive news on when the new qualifications are being introduced? We have been told that Int 1&2 and Standard Grade won't be around in 2 years' time (with the proviso in exceptional circumstances for the Intermediate courses) therefore National 4 & 5 need to be offered in the forthcoming S2 options in place of Int 1&2 and Standard Grade. Is this correct? The final course specs for the new quals are only due out in April which won't give us long if we need to begin delivering in June. OK the content is broadly similar but it does seem a bit rushed if this is true. I was previously led to believe that we wouldn't be beginning to deliver the new quals until June 2013. Does anyone know for certain what's happening? Thanks

  3. The current S2 should sit the new qualifications. If you don't feel ready they are running SG and Ints for an extra year as a cross over period. There's an FAQ section on the SQA website which talks about it. According to the SQA, as teh qualifications simply assess what's in the Outcomes you shouldn't need any more time! There are loads of draft documents, though, and I can't see them putting through radical changes at this point.

  4. Nat 4 & 5 shouldn't be offered in S2 options... S3 are not meant to be presented for qualifications under CfE (giving them time to develop depth & breadth & all that...) but the current S2 should be sitting the new qualifications when they hit S4, so beginning June 2013 to sit May 2014. Unless things speed up they'll prob be doing Int 1/2 though. Some schools in my area plan to give the current S2 Int 1 next year because they don't have a curriculum for them and SG is oot the door. We haven't decided yet...

  5. But if schools are making kids choose in S2 for S3 and S4 then it might become relevant. Having said that, there is guidance that the decision to put kids in for 4 or 5 should be taken as late as possible to allow all kids the chance at Nat 5 in S4 as far as is practical and possible.
There is a curriculum. It's just not got a finalised exam at the end of it yet!

Current S2 pupils will sit new N5 exams in May 2014. N4 will have no external exams. School which wish to offer S4 students the widest possible choice of subjects for SQA presentation will want the flexibility of starting national courses in S3.

Draft outlines of course structures and examinable content have been published - see the SQA website.

No way to run a railroad but hey, teachers are used to that. (Doesn't excuse it though.)
