New primary ICT Co-ordinator - Essential websites anyone!?

Discussion in 'Computing and ICT' started by impulce, Sep 21, 2009.

  1. Hi,
Ive been asked to be the primary ICT co-ordinator at my school (only in my 2nd year of teaching and school didnt have subject coordinators before our new head!) and am a bit lost. Have recieved some files from becktonboy which have been helpful, and am just starting to peruse the internet.
I have very little idea what a coordinator does other than manage/order resources, and look at how ICT could improve etc. To be honest im relatively new to teaching and feel very out of order going and suggesting to more experienced teachers what they should be doing ICT wise - alot of them know more than me!
Id be really interested in any good websites that keep you up to date with ICT initiatives and anything ICT related that coordinators really should know, and also anything practical (software, websites) that people recommend.
    Thanks!

  3. Hey
I'm in my second year of co-ordinating ICT and it's fab. Great subject to co-ordinate - but incredibly far reaching. On top of co-ordinating the subject, I also appear to be stuck with the teccy bits like changing printer cartridges, which is a little bit of a hasssle, but never mind...
If you want to have a look at my action plan to help with some ideas on how to structure a year of co-ordinating a subject then I can email it to you.
Last year for me it was a bit of a getting my head around it time. This year I've got loads and loads of stuff going on to develop the subject, and it's fab. Today, with someone from the LEA, I ran a day looking at loads of different technologies with five classes. Granted, I'm exhausted, but it was awesome and the kids and adults all got something out of it.
What I've found with the subject is that ICT was being taught in isolation in our school. I've been working over the past year or so to integrate it more and encourage cross curricular stuff, and that seems to be paying off.
The other thing with my school is that there are quite a few teachers and support staff who get very antsy about computers and aren't secure in subject knowledge. I've also run staff training every few weeks for them to attend, which has helped.
Have you looked at the BECTA site? There is some stuff on there. If you're close or in London there is also the BETTS exhibition to attend in January which is really interesting.
ICT is quite a lot of work, but it's so interesting and you can take it really far, so good luck!

  4. Its great to hear from someone so positive!!
Your action plan would be greatly appreciated!! My email is N0059003@hotmail.co.uk. Ive got to sit down with the head soon as ICT is in our SIP and i really have no idea where to take ICT, other than to encourage its use cross-curricularly and not just in terms of sitting at a PC!
I have always had a love for ICT but have no ideas of its scope in terms of a school setting, and especially in terms of KS2 as i am a KS1 teacher. I generally dont feel well-educated enough! Which is why i want to swot up!
Im not near London but will be having a look at the BECTA website.

Any tips on what Ofsted would expect to see in an ICT Coordinators file?

    Thankyou again!

Hi I have just become ICT also. I have looked at the BECTA website which does have lots of info. I have also found this website really useful:
    http://www.kented.org.uk/ngfl/ict/support/

imogensf - is there any chance I could see a copy of your action plan as I am in the process of doing mine and would be really grateful to see how you have gone about it. Thanks so much

  6. The Becta matrix is an essential tool. I have been a co-ordinator for the past 7 years and this matirx links directly to your action plan and school development plan. It covers all aspects of the post and Becta gives support to your e-safety policy.
The Matirx is good place to define where you are starting from and identifys a baseline with ideas for future development that can be adapted to link to your school targets.

Good luck I am still very keen after 7 years it is such a changing subject with new challenges every year. I have been teaching ICT from Nursery to Year 6 and having a good overview of your children's current capabilities gives you a grounding for the curriculum development.

Have fun ...but in small steps ....
Your file should contain areas concerning action plans; policies; leadership; sustainability; curriculum development; staff training; assessment; e-safety; wider community ( parents, afterschool clubs etc)

  7. Thanks debbie!
Set up my file today with most of those areas - but forgot about policies!
What would come under the sustainability section?

  8. http://www.teach-ict.com/ is a must view. Dig around it in for some really valuable resources.
Also www.yacapaca.com is well worth a good long look. Use yacapaca well and its a fantastic resource (plus its free).

  9. ideas to inspire is a good resource too.

    good luck

  14. Hi All
www.vital.ac.uk is a good website. The link to the South East regional page is http://www.vital.ac.uk/community/course/view.php?id=289, however there is a page per region. Vital is an online community and the point of it is to help teachers enhance their ICT skills. You can find case studies, hotseats, springboards, spaces, wikis, forums...everything you need in the world of ICT education!
If you are in the South East, we are running some Teachmeets over the nxt couple of months...one in Southampton, Oxfordshire & Milton Keynes. Everyone is welcome & it's free!!! go to the South East page link above to get more details.

  15. I have recently been appointed as the new ICT co-ordinator at my school and would be grateful for any support/guidance people can offer. Imogensf if your action plan is still available, that would be a massive help, and will at least give me somewhere to start
