    Hi all,

I am a NQT in year 5 and have just had my first EAL pupil with very little English, but who appears very able in his own language, join my class.

I have had no advice from my EAL coordinator and am unsure how to best provide for him, particularly in literacy.

Should I to begin with aim his work at year 5 objectives or purely focus on learning some English?
What writing outcome should I be aiming for in the early weeks?
How much of his home language should I be using in the classroom when scaffolding?

Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Well if the child has no English this tells you what you should focus on.

Many previous posts on this topic you may be able to find. At least you are dealing with a youngster who seems to have language skills secure. You may find some useful exercises via my TES resources indexed on my blog languageisheartosay.com - symbol support is really good for this sort of case.
