New DT Studios

Discussion in 'Design and technology' started by designt, Jun 9, 2011.

  1. I am tasked to redesign my school's new design studios to make them 'design friendly'. I would not like chairs & tables. Like modular forms of furniture to allow different arrangements and allow small group discussion. Have been scouring the web but did not really find a suitable concept....anyone can help?

Ummmm on a slightly more positive note.........
I have just redesigned our design studio and we infact had our own furniture ideas made so groups can work in learning three's. We have also used specialist lighting derived from air travel and use leds to try to alter mood and attention in the room, just like of business and first class flights, controlled via an iphone. Furthermore we designed our own ptfe false pure white ceiling which hangs like the inside of a tent. Our main work tables are round and promote group work and we can use our Apple TV to project images via our ipad onto the white round tables. The entire space is in pure white and accentuated by the led lighting. We applied for a bid from the Wolfson foundation and were successful. The foundation put up 50% of the funds and the school matched. The department is now show casing this space to other schools across London and the South east. If you need funding and have a sound educational reasoning behind your ideas and how these can impact both teaching and learning then think about contacting Wolfson with a proposal and bid.

  3. That sounds absolutely amazing,I am jealous! Our capitation for the year is under £1000. We have to contact local maufactures and ask if they will donate materials like card and acrylic, etc. How did you go about getting the funding?

We contacted them, they are known as the Wolfson Foundation www.wolfson.org.uk/ . Simply a board who invest in innovative projects. We went 50-50 with them but I am not sure if they would fund a slighlty smaller endeavour outright? You can always ask, but think very carefully about the advantages of your ideas and how these will enrich the pupils and how they impact on teaching and learning.
    Good Luck

  5. Your space sounds amazing! I would love to re model our DT space.......Is there any way I can see images of what you've done?
