Need to start my third term again

Discussion in 'NQTs and new teachers' started by hippyhappy, May 25, 2010.

  1. In my first two terms I sailed through my NQT. I then went on maternity leave and came back to school which had changed - new teachers, new head, new culture. I came back part-time as a PPA cover, which I did not realise was not inductable. I was then given a class (when LA got involved) but with someone who had a history of being impossible to work with plus she had her own disciplinary issues going on. I was put under enormous pressure and I managed the best I could but I was not coping with observations and with my year group colleagues (who tattle-taled every little thing I did "wrong" to the head). I was given an extension but half way through I realised that the support I needed was never going to come. LA were happy to swoop me out of the school and I did a placement till the end of the term. My third term was effectively cancelled by the LA and I have another term to go still.
Since then I have been doing supply but am keen to start my third term. However, its been impossible to get a job as schools dont seem to want to touch with a bargepole. I am in no man's land as I am not an NQT fresh out of uni ( I qualified in 2007) but I dont have a proven track record.
Any idea what I can do/say on application forms to get me an interview. I know that if I got an interview and a lesson obs, I would probably nail the job.

It's a pity you didn't post on here when on maternity leave. There are specific Induction rules that allow for someone on ML, who was meeting the standards prior to ML, to have their Induction finalised at the designated time, even if still on ML.
Contact the LA advisor for your specialism to see if they know about any up-coming maternity leaves or longer-term sickness covers where you could complete Induction.

  3. Hindsight is a wonderful thing - I would have done alot of things differently. But as far as I was concerned at the time, things had been going well and I saw no reason whatsoever for things to chanve.
I think the LA have washed their hands of me. When I email, I get wishy washy vague emails back. Perhaps I need to be more direct ?
    I do feel utterly alone.

Firstly don't do emails - they are easily deleted. Write letters.
If you are in a Union do involve them for support. if not consider joining one
On your application forms you should emphasise that you only have one term to complete as an NQT but the reality is that there is a lot of competition particularly for non shortage secondary subjects.Getting in through supply where you can make an impression in the school is likely to be the best avenue.
  6. My union was not very helpful but I might contact the regional office.
Dont I have to put my history on the application form, ie how come I was at school from Sept 07 till Dec 09 but only managed to complete 2 terms (although I did take maternity of course but only for 9 months of that time)? I have been putting in an explanation on my app forms.
  7. I am veru sorry to hear what you've had to go through. I am in exactly the same situation, however I have used my supply limit up. Supply is a fantastic way in, especially at this time of year. Make sure you try to introduce yourself to heads and where possible explain your situation to them. Get your supply agency on board and expain your situation. They may be able to get you into schools with vacancies advertised etc. The other thing I would suggest is always visiting a school and trying to speak to the head to make them aware of your situation. Also write a clear cover letter exlaining your situation. It's a tough one. I wish you the best of luck.
Your LA has obviously been supportive is there a way of them supporting you to get another term?
  8. Thanks for your support. Yes it is tough, isn't it. I have visited schools and talked to heads/deputy heads and they have all (I have visited 3 schools for jobs) been very nice about it but have basically said that unless my application was outstanding they would be reluctant to shortlist me. I think my application is pretty good, but not outstanding.
Remember, you can get extension from your LA to increase the supply time limit. Its not set in stone. I know that mine has already said that I can get extension if I dont get a job within the time limit.
  9. I just wanted to write an update.
In September, through my supply agency, I got maternity leave cover for one term, and which counted as my third term. Things started shakily as my confidence levels were so low, and I failed an Ofsted obs, but I took it as a learning experience and stepped up my game. The support I received from my induction tutor was excellent and she said to me "you can do this, you just have to believe in yourself".
Anyway, I am happy to tell that I have finally passed my NQT! Yay me [IMG] As you can imagine I am absolutely estatic.

  10. Congratulations!!! [IMG] I can't wait to get mine out of the way
