Names for SEN departments - what is yours called?

Discussion in 'Special educational needs' started by YeeBod, May 27, 2010.

  1. I am wanting to re-brand the SEN department I have run for 14 years as we are moving rooms for next year. Currently we are called The Learning Support Dept. I know of a couple of schools who use 'The Additional Learning Centre' as their name and I do like this. Does anyone have any other suggestions for the department name?

After relinquishing its original title of "Remedial Department" two decades ago, my school's SEN department changed its name to the "Equal Opportunities Department". I don't know how it got this new name, but I like to think it may have had something to do with US President John F. Kennedy's memorable phrase “All of us do not have equal talent, but all of us should have an equal opportunity to develop our talents.” I am old enough to remember the radio announcement of Kennedy's assassination; I was a sixth former at the time.
By the way, if you happen to be considering "The Base" as a possible name - I know a few schools came up with that idea a number of years ago - be aware that "Al Qaeda" is Arabic for "The Base", so I suggest leaving that name well alone.[IMG]

Anything which gets away from the SEN label is good for me . I liked our Curriculum Support label and insisted that we were know as a Faculty like other departments in school to ' mirror ' the fact that were there to do exactly that ( only the support can only be as good as the c/ *** on offer - discuss ! ? ) and not abtsit / providea holding pen ! We had our own strap line and Handbook describing who we were and what we did in terms of expertise / qualifications . You may want to re invent your self this way too . Have come across Student Development Centre ( SDC ) and wanted the KS4 Base to adopt this but it is just called the Base. I too like the EQ emphasis from Dodros and / or has entitlement as key . You may want to google some schools websites - sometimes you can get an idea of what is out there and you can adapt accordingly .

  5. The school that my nephew attends has a SEN department called The Blue Lagoon.

  7. SSD (student support services)
    SAD (student assistance dept.)

  8. We call ourselves 'Pupil Services'

  9. I callled my class the TLC ( I told the boss it stood for, Transitional Learning Centre but I think we all know what it means)! This yr I've introduced iCLASS ( Improving career, learning & social skills) Our acronyms have come a long was since the ESN days ( thank god)

  10. Haha this made me laugh we have two rooms in our school - The Rainbrow Room and "The Base"...

  11. Some interesting names ... we re-branded in September when we moved into a new 'suite' in the main part of our school. We asked the students what they'd like to call the SEN area and after lots of entries we all agreed on 'BOOST' ... boost your confidence, your self esteem, your grades, your learning etc. We then had a competition for a logo, now I just have to get it made into a sign. Happy naming.[IMG]

We have three sub-departments, The main one; learning support department or LSD (yes- the kids soon clocked on to that one!) Dyslexia Base, and Student Support base for school phobia or particularly vulnerable students.

  14. Can I suggest you use a name which does not give SEN kids a tag.
Non SEN kids can be cruel- how about using this name <u>'The Lounge' </u>
This sends a positive message rather than label.

  15. We have recently 're-branded'. Our Head came up with the name...Specialised Learning. We also call TAs ATs, Assistant Teachers - because that's what they do!
