Music Workshop on the theme of Egypt for Year 2 - Help !

Discussion in 'Music' started by donut gal, Feb 5, 2012.

  1. That just about sums it up! I have to run a 45 min workshop for Year 2 on Egypt this week and I just can't think of anything apart from Walk like an Egyptian. which will generally wind the children up so may be have that as music while I am leaving!! Anybody got any ideas or have done something like this before? Any easy songs that can be taught in just one session?
    Many thanks in advance

    Some music and movement, perhaps?
Aida is set in Egypt (particularly good from 0'36" onwards):
    Or there's Saint-Saens L'Afrique:
(the war drums from 5'50" to the end works well)
Or there's Gounod's wonderful "Cleopatra Variations" which don't sound at all Egyptian:
(I fear I used to do far too much French ballet music with our first orchestra)
  4. Take a look at The Ancient Egyptians from the THat's What I Call A Class Assembly Series from Out of the Ark music. Short mini play with script, 3/4 songs about the Egyptians, 4 pages of cross curricular ideas to incorporate into the the mini assembly/play. Have a listen to the songs.

Y2s... I'd do something creative about the Nile. Get the instruments out and do some river compositions - loud bits for the flood (what am I saying, it'll all be loud) soft bits for as the water goes down. MAybe a simple ostinato with different groups coming in to do their bit, as the river flows past different scenes (use pictures?) Sing something about boats... Down The River (might be on Sing Up) or there's always Row your Boat. Just keep talking about the Nile to make it Egypt -themed enough. Row, Row, Row your felucca doesn't really work, I admit.
