Music for Special Occasions

Discussion in 'Music' started by makethemusicnow, Apr 15, 2008.

  1. Listen to some musical examples from all different special events and guess the events and then give musical reasons why....this would work for Year 9 upwards...depends which year group you are looking at?

You could get pupils to start on ideas for the 2012 olympics. Although 20 mins is not very long.

I'd pick weddings - most kids have heard "Here comes the Bride" and could you could discuss its major + happy sound, with the use of cadences allowing for the bride to walk for as long (or short) a time as she wanted down the aisle. Then you could suggest a few pieces of incidental music for the various special points in the ceremony and give the class a few choices asking them to explain the reason for that choice.
Let us know what you do in the end and how it went - good luck!
  4. Or what about Fanfares? They are used for all manner of occasions - 20th Century Fox for the intro to a film,The Last Post as a military fanfare, Weddings have a sort of fanfare before the bride walks down the isle, Royal fanfares....? Could also talk about how imitation can be used as part of a fanfare, so one trumpet starts (say the Last Post), then another enters a bar or so later, then another?
