Robert Mugabe, the Zimbabwean independence icon turned authoritarian leader, has died aged 95.

Mr Mugabe had been receiving treatment in a hospital in Singapore since April. He was ousted in a military coup in 2017 after 37 years in power.

The former president was praised for broadening access to health and education for the black majority.

But later years were marked by violent repression of his political opponents and Zimbabwe's economic ruin.

For once I find myself in agreement with Emily Thornberry: his death is not something that I will be shedding a tear over. He was corrupt and a mass murderer.

Sadly the situation in Zimbabwe seems to be, if possible, even worse since Mugabe was ousted.

Made a good beginning as president but became a cruel, paranoid mass murderer.

The stories my Zimbabwean friend told me about her experiences... ooft. Empty shelves in supermarkets, where bread (when it was available) was an outrageous, silly price. She ended up in the Highlands, teaching in the school I did my probation year in (circa 2006) She'd fled the country, leaving behind a lot (including her dogs, who were looked after by friends)
She actually went back there after she retired, and is teaching again.

He was an excellent president till the power corrupted him.
Such a waste of potential. Zim has a long way to go, yet.

It's always fun to watch how some people respond when one of their murderous idols finally snuffs it. Check out some of these tweets about 'Uncle Bob'...
I was surprised that he died in Singapore. I'd have expected him to be in Zurich, where he could be closer to his life's stealings.

He was a barsteward to a lot of his own citizens, but at least he got the land back for them. More than Mandela ever did for his people.

Yeah, so at least then they could starve to death on their own property.

America (the richest country in the world) has a higher death rate from malnutrition than Cuba.
