Msz...can you advise?

  1. Hi,
    Sorry to bother you so near to the end of term.
    Am I right in thinking that you have posted about Big Talk for Big Writing? Would you recommend the book (I've been on the course which was tantalising but not quite detailed enugh to follow up in class...

    What is The Big Talk?
    The Big Talk is one of two things. It is a modified version of Big Writing for children not yet ready or able to write (either through age or the fact that they are still in the early stages of learning English or are unable to write in English). Alternatively it is a session or lesson in a subject other than English, where the teacher plans for pupils to develop their learning through talking to the principles of the VCOP / Big Writing.
    Big Talk as a pre-writing activity:
    The Big Talk is a predominantly oral session, often with some use of an interactive whiteboard and a flip chart. It includes adults scribing to model writing at some points. For very young children or children in the earliest stages of learning English it is best done as a small group activity, either with children seated on the carpet or around a block of tables.
    Ideally, a Big Talk session for the very young or those very new to English will have the following characteristics:

    1. Takes place little and often throughout the week, probably for around ten minutes at a time.

    2. Is opened and closed with The Chant and a short, lively song. (the writer uses ‘If you’re happy and you know it...’ This is first introduced through focus on the word ‘happy’ and all make happy faces, followed by sad faces, angry faces, scared faces and back to happy faces for the singing.

    3. Is very lively with lots of praise and small treats or rewards.

    4. Often concludes with a shared sentence that can be scribed on to large card and displayed on the Super Sentence Wall, to be read daily by all children.
