Moving to Year 2 - Phonics Help!

    Having previously worked at key stage 2, I've recently been given the opportunity to work at key stage 1 and am very excited at the change. I would be really grateful for any resource suggestions relating to phonics teaching as this is relatively new to me. I'm particularly interested in any online phonic resources/programmes so any recommendations are very welcome.

    Year 2 will mostly be finished with phonics...search for phase 6 to get some ideas, but they should be more into reading and comprehension.

    Hi Jamesjoyce2,
    I would highly recommend The Ants in the Apple spelling program. I was using it in Year 2 for the past four years it involves spelling, grammar, vocabulary etc worksheets are ready-made and are very effective for stage 1-Year 2 students.
    Another online educational tool would be studyladder.com it has great literacy resources.
    Abcya.com is another online educational website that has different phonic games for students to engage in (word bingo, spelling, letter sounds, sight words bingo and many more.

    Possibly depends on where you teach. I’ve got Year 6 pupils still on Phase 5 phonics!

    I did say 'mostly' finished...
    I've taught phase 5 to year 5 and phase 6 to year 1 in the same school. But there we go.

    Thanks for all of the suggestions - they're a great help! Maybe a very silly question though does it matter if sounds are given to children in different accents e.g American? I have found some free online resources though they are in American accents - does it really matter? I'm assuming the sounds are pretty much the same.

    Hmmm, I think that's a little bit of a presumption especially with the ever increasing demands from special needs children. I had 6 in my small class of 19 last year and to be perfectly honest, being a KS2 specialist is not the best prep for planning the additional support they need when you have zero support from anyone with appropriate knowledge.

    To the OP, you are a braver man than me. I've often been told I am so well suited to KS1 but just haven't the knowledge or experience and the way learning is organised is often hugely different. I even found Year 3 a challenge as in effect it is a reinforcement and adaptation year between the Key Stages. Sure if all the kids are on track, everything goes swimmingly, but if you have a high percentage of stragglers, whether due to ability or ever changing teachers, expert skills are needed to highlight and strengthen those key areas.

    Good luck; time to see if you can sink or swim.

    Yes it matters... A LOT
    But year 2 will almost all know all the sounds already. Go and talk to the current year 1 teacher about what the class will need in terms of phonics and literacy.

    PhonicsPlay has some free parts and is cheap for the rest.
    Letters and sounds mentioned above is free.
    TES resources has heaps of free resources.

    If we're talking specialism, in terms of training, then I'm a secondary maths specialist. I taught middle school for many years, so years 5-8, then year 5 and 6 in primary for a few years before moving to year 2. It really wasn't a problem at all.
    Good teachers will always adapt whatever they do to suit the children in front of them, so it matters not a jot how old they are or how able.
    Nonsense...excellent teachers can teach any age.

    Ha, make you wrong actually and think it's verging on arrogance or ignorance.

    Sure we all have the skill set to be able to do the teaching job but to be a quality practitioner in a specific age group takes experience, adaptability and unique skills.

    I consider myself pretty skilled and fair well in comparison with my peers over a long period of years. I've taught the full range really from university undergrads to nursery and I think it is easier to move upwards than it is to move down. As stated above, the organisation of the class learning can be hugely different in lower school. Have you ever been in a classroom where they are doing 4 different activities at once? Further, to assess and address issues arising, a teacher should know exactly where a child has come from and where they should be heading for every learning goal. That's a process that takes time and cannot just be pulled off a curriculum document.

    A few years ago I watched a very skilled and highly thought of year 5 teacher talk completely over the heads of her Year 2 class, using language they did not understand and making assumptions they had an advanced skill set for the task at hand that they simply did not have. It was painful. Not every one gets or is suited to teaching different aged children.

    Children generally reach my level (Key Stage 2) and have a pretty good skill set. I marvel at those who have taught them the basics as I really am not sure how that happens.

    Nope. Headteachers can and often do use the exact same argument to move people to different year groups. It is an argument often mentioned on here to those who, unlike the OP, are not excited by moving to somewhere new.
    I was great at teaching secondary school maths.
    I was great at teaching a range of subjects in middle schools.
    I was great at teaching KS2 in primary school.
    I was great at teaching KS1 in primary school.
    I was great at teaching KS2 in an independent school.
    I'm now great at teaching nursery.
    Yes, one needs skills and adaptability, but the best teachers adapt every year because the cohort is different. I spent three years teaching year 6 in the same primary, but was a completely different kind of teacher in each of those years.
    I'm sure the OP will love teaching year 2 and your negativity about a teacher more experienced in KS2 moving to year 2 is not helpful to them and is based on your own uncertainty about how you'd cope.
    I think the opposite and many others would agree. I have also taught almost the same range, every year group bar Reception and only up to year 13. Definitely easier to move down. The OP will be fine.
    Year 2 and year 3 are very, very similar and if you can do one, then you can do the other.
    Yeps, and in ones where there are 13 children doing 13 different activities and just me as a teacher having to assess in seconds and move learning on. I've also taught in KS2 classes where we all worked on the same task as a whole group for an hour or more. Great teachers have a range of skills and I have no doubt the OP will be just fine.
    I agree, and knowing children well is the sign of an excellent teacher. I have no doubt the OP can manage this with no trouble at all.
    I agree not everyone is suited to teaching every level, but the best teachers adapt and can teach effectively to any group of children. The OP, who is excited about the move and is already looking for ideas to sort out their perceived weaknesses in knowledge will adapt and be great.

    Car crash thread that did nothing to answer the OP's question.

    We're all tired. I think it depends on your cohort as to what phonics support individual children need. From a light sprinkling of phase 5/6 practice to full-on key words and GPC tracking support. Depends.
