MFL for BESD - suitable accreditation/courses

Discussion in 'Modern foreign languages' started by eukmw2, Jul 31, 2012.

  1. Hi, I have been asked to deliver MFL at a BESD school in September. Most of the courses followed are BTEC or Entry Level in other subjects. Currently, as there was no specialist in MFL, there is no accreditation and they only study during KS3 ( I am hoping to change this!)

Does any one have any advice as to which entry level courses would be suitable in this setting. Bearing in mind that some of the pupils are high non attenders I need to find a course that still gives them an opportunity to receive an accreditation.

I have looked at Michel Thomas for schools but not able to find anyone who has used this successfully.

Thanks in advance. Not long left to plan as it was only decided this week.

There is an Entry Level course availabe in quite a few languages (AQA). There is also a course one step higher than that, in case some are more able/better attenders, this is the FCSE (also accredited by AQA) and is only available in languages. A distinction is an FCSE attracts the same points as a D at GCSE. Basically Entry Level is national curriculum levels 1-3 and FCSE is levels 4-6.

Which language will you be delivering? I hope you have been asked to do this because you are a linguist, otherwise this will be beyond challenging.
  4. Thank you I will look into that entry level. I will be delivering Spanish. I am a language specialist but have been teaching across the curriculum for a while as I work in besd. I am keen to get back into my subject but am a little out of touch having taught mainly Maths and ICT. I still have my old schemes for Mira and Listos but thought I would look into an accreditation for them as well.

You will find some Spanish resources on my website which are being designed to match Mira - as they are game type activities, they might interest your students. Unfortunately, I haven't set up an Entry Level Spanish page.
The 110mb server is down at the moment, so you won't be able to access these resources yet, but as a rule, they are available 24/7.
  6. FCSE would possibly work. Students will get credit for what they do and they all count to a qualification at the end.
