Mentoring a teaching assisstant

Discussion in 'Teaching assistants' started by sjl9876, May 3, 2012.

  1. Hi everyone, I'm looking for a little bit a guidance... I am a teacher in a special school in an early years setting. I have a teaching assistant who is on a temporary contract which is due to be renewed and has been in my class since September. I have been asked to be her mentor as I understand there has been some complaints against her. I wondered if anyone had some advice, or format for paperwork, etc. Amy advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

I don't have experience of mentoring in an education setting, but did mentoring when in the private sector. I would start off by agreeing on objectives for the mentoring relationship (which should be regularly reviewed). The person I was mentoring would take ownership of setting up the meetings and keeping the minutes. Once objectives are agreed, it is a case of thinking through how you can help that person. In some cases it may involve arranging for your mentee to spend time with other people (you could help to get that set up).

  4. Great ideas thank you!
