memory stick is dead!

Discussion in 'Computing and ICT' started by beckycharles, Nov 27, 2011.

  1. Hi all,
Much to my annoyance my memory stick has died, just as
I was about to back it up for the first time in ages. Light doesn't
come on, comp doesn't pick it up. Its a sandisk 16gb and I've not had it
for long ( maybe six months). Has anyone else had this problem? Anyone
managed to recover lost data? Most of it is on the server at school or
on an external hard drive, but some things are not backed up :(
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance!
  2. Try it in a different USB slot. Try it in a different computer. Chances are, though, it's goosed. The components and circuitry are very close to the socket, meaning that small forces have a relatively large effect. There are data recovery companies out there but they'll charge you an arm and a leg.

Chances are you're best off chalking it up to a lesson learned...

    Really :)
One (additional to HH) thing that might be worth trying is to boot up a Live Linux CD (e.g.say an Ubuntu Install disk) and plug it into that. I have sometimes recovered broken Windows filesystems that way that Windows won't recognise.
