Making drawers run smoothly ....any hints

Discussion in 'Personal' started by pastychucker, Mar 29, 2012.

  1. I have just bought a second hand chest of drawers. Two of the drawers stick. Any hint or tips on getting them to run smoothly again? They are melamine type drawers not wood - so they can't be sanded.
Thank you lovely TES people. x

  2. Rub a candle along the grooves.
Or graphite powder (a pencil will serve the purpose).

a bit of candle wax or soap on the runners?

  4. I usually find the candle trick works great but I've only tried it on wood.
You mention melamine so if the wax doesn't work try Vaseline.

  5. ...or wax crayons if you've no candles.

  6. Cool answers. Thanks.
The groove is in the drawer bit (melamine) and the runners are wood. A friend has also said furniture polish will do it so I now have lots of things to try.

I'm led to believe a bit of Burt Bacharach after a candle-lit dinner can make some drawers slide smoothly, but enough of my unreconstructed 1970s ooer missus attempts at humour ;-)

As the runners are wood, you could sand the runners.
You could also spray polish the runners. Polish works on sluggish curtain rails too.

  11. Thank you Jubilee
