Major academy chain cuts teachers by 13 per cent and spends more than £1m on staff pay-offs

    ‘One of the country’s biggest academy chains slashed its wage bill by more than 10 per cent and spent £1.2 million on staff pay-offs last year.

    Delta Academy Trust, previously known as the School Partnership Trust Academies (SPTA), was on a drive to reduce its deficit and “ensure sustainability”, according to its latest financial accounts.

    The trust, which runs 44 academies across Yorkshire and the Humber, spent £1.2 million on "staff restructuring" – comprising redundancy and severance payments – in 2016-17, up from £343,000 in 2015-16.’

    What are your views about this story? How do you feel about teachers losing their jobs? Are these radical steps really the best way to ensure sustainability for an academy chain?

    But Delta’s management and support team grew, from 60 to 78 full-time equivalents.
    Mr Tarn received a salary of between £180,000 and £185,000 – slightly less than his predecessor Sir Paul Edwards, who was paid £185,000 to £190,000.
    One academy left the trust during the period covered by the accounts, in December 2016.
    The accounts do not specifically state the cost of the trust’s rebrand, but “marketing and advertising” costs rose from £84,000 to £130,000.

    Interesting priorities. Fewer teachers almost certainly means larger class sizes (or heavier workloads so less preparation time) which suggests quality of education isn't top of the list.

    In one sense this isn't news. A major attraction to the government (and previous ones) regarding academies is that they can say "Nothing to do with us, independence is important to education" and then shout, "Commercial confidentiality" should any awkward questions be asked.
    Of course, it's terrible that teachers are unemployed purely to balance the books. I take it as a given that the Executive Head's salary increased sharply which would make it worse.
    So what about sustainability for the academy chain, no doubt the words "Commercial Confidentiality" will be deployed again (and again)

    Sadly the proliferation of bureaucrats and managers isn't just something that afflicts schools. It's happens in universities, the NHS and many, many other areas, both private and public.

    Most of these people don't contribute anything to society. On the whole they are like a cancer, placing an often unsustainable burden on the honest decent parts of society that do provide useful services to one another.

    Wonder how much was spent on legal services in negotiating all those redundancies and severance deals...

    Be careful what you wish for....

    All readers of this forum know of a much cheaper and more efficient way of off-loading unwanted staff.
