Made a mistake- not sure what to do now

    Hi,

    I am on a SCITT course, to be a secondary history teacher. I do love history but I don't love teaching it.

    I was a SEN TA in primary for 5 years (with breaks to have my children)I was the lead practitioner for autism, liaising with the La inclusion team in one school before doing 1 year as a secondary cover supervisor and running the SEN lunch club.

    I know now that though I love history as a subject my heart is in SEN and that is why I loved my previous jobs.

    I want to be a KS3 teacher in a special school, I did a placement many years ago ( TA Training) in a PMLD class I am absolutely sure this is what I want to do.

    I don't know my next steps as I can't afford to quit the course I am on and start again in SEN if that is even possible as I am 35 and have a family to support.

    I have read it is possible to do Nqt in special schools but would anyone take me on over a SEN trained or even Primary trained candidate.

    Not sure what to do.

    There is no specific SEN ITT training .Special school teachers usually also have QTS and often teaching experience before entering the sector. You can be an NQT in a special school you need to secure a post in that sector once you are qualified.
    Try and get your alternative ( or second) placement in a special school this would help strengthen your application
    Consider voluntary experience with special needs children
    Look into other additional qualifications that could help such as first aid, Makaton etc.

    Try and get as much SEN experience as possible during your PGCE - tell them you're interested in this area, and see what they can do. They'll be happy that you're interested - if you can't get your second placement at a special school they'd probably be more than happy to give you a SEN class at any other school they work with.

    I spent my consolidation placement (the final 2 weeks of the course) supporting at a SEN unit; it was great, I really enjoyed it. There may be opportunities for you to do the same.

    I believe I'm correct in saying that if you want to be a SENCO you need to be a qualified teacher, so I think you're on the right track, although you have to make your own path towards this goal because there is no one standard path to follow.

    Thank you both for your replies.

    I am going to speak to my SCITT provider to see if it is possible to increase the amount of SEN experience I get this year ( I have been told by someone who did the course last year that we get 1 day) with a view to gaining employment in a Special School for my NQT year.
    I am glad that there isn't a specialised route it gives me hope that I will be able to blaze my own trail.

    I trained in History through SCITT. When having to talk about second order concepts, I felt at times i started to lose interest in the 'history' of the content due to having to meet the requirements of the skills. HOWEVER, this shock soon vanished and actually, when I became more confident with the specific concepts my passion for the History started to shine through ever more than ever before.
    Does the placement have a strong SEN dept? My first placement had a specialist ASD unit which i asked to work in for a couple of weeks. Ask your mentor if its possible to 'experience' that side of things. The argument 'It will make me a better teacher' works quite well.
