I was hoping it was an article outlining the widespread inability of the SQA to write quality exam questions and their inadequate blanket approach to dealing with complaints from a wide range of subject specialists. Instead I see an anecdote about one question in one subject's exam from one specific year. You using a sledgehammer to crack your Christmas walnuts this year?

    Well done - and in homework time too! At least you could be bothered, unlike a certain other SQA apologist who couldn't - boo hoo! I think the SQA must be so pleased to have people like you defending it at every turn against such monstrous slurs to their (er nearly perfect) reputation.
  5. You are one for making unfounded accusations! lol I DID read the article. I just didn't think it contained anything pertinent to your argument. ie no indication of this being a WIDESPREAD problem, one that requires the setting up and financing of an entire new body (one which you no doubt at some point in the future would see as "The Man" and complain that they weren't doing their job properly etc etc) in order to regulate it. Sledgehammer to crack a walnut.

    Nail on the head. Near perfect reputation. If their reputation was as bad as you imply in your posts, then something would have been done years ago. But it wasn't so it's not. Stop crying about it.

    I suppose you never make mistakes? And if you do, I suppose you listen carefully to the children who spot the mistakes and issue a full correction, with apologies to all parties involved, including the parents of the children who witnessed your mistake?

    Or do you simply acknowledge the mistake, correct it for the pupils and make sure it doesn't happen in the future?

    Irony is clearly wasted here.

    If only the SQA did that. I do hope SQA people are reading this - you are doing such a great PR job for them - and all for free. Woo Hoo!!!

    So, in England, Michael Gove has decided to scrap the planned move from GCSE's to EBC's after taking advice from a number of agencies including OfQual. Meanwhile in the frozen north we are stuck with CfE while our man sticks his fingers in his ears, sings tee de lee de lee, and laughs manically because: we have no exam regulator; he is not interested in what anyone else says and therefore he can do and say what he likes as can the SQA.

    But then our Education System is so much better than theirs - or that's the view from the Gulag.

    Here is a question, from a past Computing (Higher) paper (2007) ...

    Q 19. (b) (iii)

    Calculate the maximum amount of memory which the Phantom IV computer can address. Give your answer in appropriate units. Show all working. (3)

    Phantom IV

    3.9 GHz Storm Processor

    2 Mb Cache memory

    32 bit Data Bus

    24 bit Address Bus

    512 Mb RAM

    320 Gb Hard Disk

    Working: Maximum memory = 2^Address Bus width in bits * Data Bus width in bits /8(convert to Bytes)/2^20(convert to MB) = 2^24 * 32 / 8 /2^20 = 64MB.

    Hence the maximum amount of addressable memory that the Phantom IV can have is 64MB (MegaBytes). However, even allowing that the question (wrongly) uses Mb (Megabit) instead of MB (MegaByte) the computed answer is plainly impossible since the RAM (part of the addressable memory) is stated to be 512 Mb, i.e. far greater than the maximum possible.

    One point I forgot to mention is that the SQA's usage of the term MB(MegaByte) for memory units is actually incorrect and has been since about the year 2000. The answer to the above question is actually 64MiB or 64 MebiBytes = 2^26Bytes = 67108864Bytes. 64MB or 64 MegaBytes is actually 64 x 10^6 Bytes = 64000000Bytes.

    Genuinely shocked by this article. There's a guy here who retired three years ago and is still in the huff about an exam that was set four years ago and is being changed in two years. How is it possible that a retired teacher can still give a stuff about what happens in teaching? Astonishing! Has the man not got golf clubs? Has he not got a garden? Has he not got soffits to repair? Has he not got lines to learn for his amateur dramatic society? Has he mastered Stayman conventions in bridge after only three years?
    My gob has ever been so smacked.
    Be strong folks, resist the temptation to make comments on the line above.

    Clearly you are not!!! Your attitude is plainly reprehensible, and as has been suggested before shows the traits of a narcissistic bully, i.e. of someone who should not be in teaching at all. There are actually many teachers who try to do the right thing for their pupils; their watchword in 'integrity', something you evidently know nothing of.

    Again this is a reprehensible comment to make; anti-democratic, bullying, unprofessional, narcissistic.
