Can some sane person tell me what's going on here?
We need a wall! That'll sort it!
Derry and Londonderry: one city with two names and allegiances. What a tragedy!
The utterly useless Karen Bradley, SoS for Northern Ireland, obviously didn't cause this violence but she is sure as h ell not up to the job of doing anything about it.
The BBC today decided which side it is on. They haven't gone away, you know.
It isn't that bad. Officially it is Londonderry and Reuters used that name. The BBC decided on Derry today but as a national, UK broadcaster it should use Londonderry. The RoI can use Derry or Doire as it sees fit. However, in the coming weeks and months many loyalists will be promising to guard old Derry's walls and remembering the siege of Derry. The two names approach is a bit of a coat trailing exercise.
The Provisional IRA put away its arms(the armalite approach) to allow its political wing to fight elections and share power(the ballot box approach) but many decided that the armed struggle should continue and formed other groups. Obviously, these groups were composed of people whom the IRA knew to be involved in the armed struggle but they allowed the true nature of Republicanism to be kept in the public eye with armed attacks after the GFA as a proxy for the Provisional IRA.
The PSNI are expected to prevent criminality but when they raid republican areas or loyalist areas they will come across the thugs. The advantage that republican thugs and murderers have is that they can persuade people that the PSNI is really the RUC.
Tony and his mates took very long spoons to the GFA discussions so they appeared to be well away from the Devil.
A thought: if there is a united Ireland what do we think life will be like for the people of the Fountain Estate in Derry given the attacks that are regularly made on it since the GFA?
