Literacy observation: help with role play inspiration

    Hi all, I'm being observed in a few weeks time in literacy with my yr2 class, where the focus is differentiation, assessment and reflection. We are reading georges marvellous medicine and writing our own version, and hopefully by that point we'll be at the point where they'll be writing about the cooking of their medicine and thinking about the sights, sounds. The description in the book at this point is lovely, lots of frothing, sparks etc. basically what I'd like to do is some sort of role play to get their imagination going, and then coming up with adjectives, similes etc to use the next day in our writing. I'm just wondering if anyone can think of resources to use in role play to spark their imagination?

    Can you link to some science?

    Mintoes in a bottle of coke works well as an 'explosion'. As does vinegar and bicarb in a little lidded pot (old film canisters work well).

    You could buy some sparkers and hold one getting children to call out words that describe the sparks. TA can scribe.

    Can you do the mixing of bicarbonate of soda with vinegar? Lots of frothing! Maybe add different food colouring? Not sure if it'd work, you'd have to try it first. Also if you do an internet search for science in the kitchen there are lots of ideas which may work.

    Yeah I was considering going down this route, just concerned bout it being a observation, is it enough teaching per se?

    If you demonstrate the 'fun' and they write excellent adjectives on sheets immediately after a demo it should be fine. Give them a table with 'sight', 'sound' and so on ready to write the adjectives in before writing later. Should be fab.

    Can you give some of the children aprons and get them to do some of the 'medicine making'? Maybe your LAs? Can you find a sound track that sounds like bubbling in a laboratory? Other children to shout out words to describe what is happening and make a collection of words on the board. Make sure you have got some boring words on the list and ask some of your MA children to use a thesaurus to find a better word (you may need to train some children how to do this if they haven't used a thesaurus before!). Model how to use these words to write a few descriptive sentences. Ask children to write some sentences of their own, cloze passage for LA. Depending on timings, children can then pick their favourite word and write on a slip of paper to create a 'WOW word wall' on a display board in the classroom. They will then have these words to refer to again for their writing.

    I'm thinking perhaps demo the bicarbonate/vinegar and coke/mentos, and get children to write words on small bits of paper, adding them into a saucepan on table. Then model selecting words and improving. More able could use thesaurus, rest could add adverbs, similes etc. less able could just select words and think about putting them together, eg bubbly, blue, frothy becomes blue bubbles frothing. what do you think?

    Sounds great, sure the kids will love it! Good luck! We have observations coming up in a few weeks though have no further details of lesson to be observed or focus. May well be asking for help in return!

    Can they write the adjectives on post its and stick them on the container you used to do the experiment?

  11. Have you got a display board you can use for prompts for this unit?
    If so, you could cut out some cauldrons/saucepans and have them up on the board ready, then label them sight, sound, smell? Then as the children wrote their words on slips of paper they could add them to the appropriate saucepan. That way they would be visible for use in the children's work later, rather than hidden in an actual saucepan.
    Depending on your plans it would be great to do some artwork based on potions and then you could add that to the display as well, possibly with photos of the experiments?

    So you show them the mintoes experiment and they think of fab words to describe what they saw, write them on a post it and stick them on the large bottle you used.

    BUT writing them large enough to see from a distance and sticking them on a large display of the equipment, as the previous poster said, is better still.
