letter of application

Discussion in 'Jobseekers' started by MissRRR, Apr 19, 2012.

  1. Hi,

I am writing my very first letter of application and not too sure how long this should be. I have covered all the areas within the job spec and I have filled 3 pages of a4 font side 12. Is this too much?

How long, on average, should a letter of application be? I don't want to be rambling on in it, but I can't find a way to cut it down as it all seems relevant to me.

    Any suggestions please?

    Thanks

I'm sure if you check in Theo's already prepared 'clickables' you see that the recommenede length is a maximum of 2 A4 sides with a reasonable size font and good margins.

Have you read the advice in the Welcome thread?
Masses of help available on here - have you been checking all the clickables and other help threads inside the Welcome thread? Also, you should read the FAQs.
For an effective application, you should send:
    • an application form with every bit filled in, no "See letter"
    • an application letter OR personal statement. Not both but certainly one of them. 2 sides A4 with proper sized font and proper sized margins all round!
    • a cover letter ONLY if you do a personal statement. See FAQs inside the Welcome thread
    • an Executive summary. If there's a space on the form, put it in there; if not, put it at the end of your letter so that it gets printed out automatically. The Welcome thread clickables explain about an executive summary.
This is too long - probably minor points of the person or job spec can be left out, or may appear just in the executive summary.
    Best wishes
